'Rainbow Wings'

My project over the last 2 years or so has been concentrating on trying to capture the diffraction of sunlight through a birds wings as it flies close in line with the sun. As you can imagine this is no easy thing to do! After much trial and error and 100,000s of rubbish shots, I have had some pleasing results:
I have recently joined the photo sharing site Photocrowd. This has given me my own URL:https://www.photocrowd.com/martingarnett/ You can join Photocrowd for free - it's very variable, but there are some fantastic photos and photographers there. I was very pleased to win the 'new entrants animals' contest with the 1st photo. If you like you could 'like' my photos and even 'follow' me.

RSPB Ynys Hir exhbition 1 April to 30 June 2019

BIRDS IN FLIGHT IN A NEW LIGHT

N.B. ALL PHOTOGRAPHS COPYRIGHT MARTIN GARNETT 2019

I am very pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of some of my photography: 'Birds in flight in a new light', at RSPB Ynys Hir Visitor Centre, in mid-Wales. It will be up until the end of June 2019 and entry is free from 1000 to 1700, daily including Sundays. This is my first exhibition of any kind and I am extremely grateful to RSPB for giving me the opportunity. If you visit, please remember to leave comments in the visitors book!

Since February 2017 I have been developing what I believe to be a new method of photographing small birds in flight. Textbooks will tell you that you need a shutter speed of 1/1000th second or faster. I have been using much slower shutter speeds of 1/60th to 1/4 second. You'd imagine that the results would be just a blur. Many times they are, but sometimes the photos can be sharp and also aesthetically pleasing:

Great Tit - 1/30th second

As the shutter speed gets slower:
Great Tit - 1/13th second
And slower:

Blue Tit? - 1/10th second

Here's some more pictures:

I will post more pictures soon!
